Masjid & Imambargah Shuhda e Karbala is a dedicated place of worship and community centre serving the Shia Muslim population of East London. Established in 2020 at 383 Barking Road, the facility emerged from a genuine community need when the local Muslim community faced a five-year gap without a mosque following the closure of the previous Imamia Mission.
The organisation stands out as the only designated mosque and imambargah in East London with formal religious dedication ceremonies conducted in the presence of hundreds of community members. The premises is substantially larger than its predecessor, offering a ground floor hall accommodating 400 people, a first-floor hall for 200, dedicated facilities for both men and women including separate entrances, a fully equipped kitchen, and purpose-built spaces including a funeral room and resident aalim accommodation. The location benefits from excellent transport links via seven bus routes and proximity to Canning Town and Plaistow tube stations, with free parking available.
Beyond religious services, Shuhda e Karbala functions as a comprehensive community hub, offering funeral services, community support, visa assistance, a library and madrassa. The organisation welcomes people of all faiths, reinforcing its role as an inclusive community institution. Services span regular daily prayers, Jumma congregations, festival observances for all 14 Masoomen, Ramadan programming, women's initiatives, and the annual Muharram procession with dedicated children's noha groups, making it the spiritual and social centre for East London's Shia community.
